Life
and Death of an American Fourtracker

John Vanderslice is a weird guy. Helming
the now defunct San Francisco band MK
Ultra, he got the recording bug and opened his own studio,
Tiny Telephone. With each solo album he delves deeper and deeper
into the recording process, experimenting with different techniques,
sounds, instruments and equipment. His latest manages to pull
together his new found obsession with his great sense of pop
sensibility to create a pretty cohesive album filled with moody,
cool sounding music that is pure Vanderslice. His writing style
is one part pretentious NoCal poet and one part pining high
school senior with a dying ballpoint. His voice is hard to describe,
other than calling it a bit on the high, nerdy side. He's also
been listening to a lot of Beulah
and Neutral Milk Hotel
lately, mixing together horns, fuzz guitar and even a bag of
loose change. Listening to his albums always leaves me a bit
sad (even pensive), but they sound amazing, and really don't
remind me of much else out there. |

Vaudville
Villain

More stripped down than his straight-ahead MF Doom stuff, and a little more dark, Viktor Vaughn is a great alter-ego in and of itself. He's a little more aggressive than MF Doom, with a little more swagger and is a little more one-noted. I guess MF Doom is the lover, and Vik Vaughn is the fighter. Melodies are pretty absent, replaced by grittiness. Whatever the case, the man can spit it. |
VV2:
Venomous Villain

I'm not much for instrumental albums or albums filled with guest spots. So imagine my disappointment when the second Vik Vaughn album turned out to be not much more than one of MF Doom's Special Herbs records? Sure there's some cool sampling on this thing, but the best part about Doom/Viktor is his vocal stylings, wacky lyrics and general delivery, of which there isn't quite enough here. Even on songs where he is rapping, his flow sounds off--like someone created the music not at the same time he was laying down the tracks. It's kind of weird and certainly nowhere as solid as Vik's "debut." But, seriously, you gonna trust me for your hip-hop tastes? |
