G. Love and Special Sauce

On the first listen, one is struck by the
oddness of this album. A white Philadelphian dude who mumbles
funky blues lyrics over a steel guitar and harmonica, G. Love
obviously has a love affair with Muddy Waters and the swamp,
or something. His mushmouth anthem, "Cold Beverage"
is immediately the most entertaining song on the album and just
cried out for a Coors commercial--and that's just where it ended
up. There are a couple other tunes that are entertaining, but
certainly not stand-out. That's the whole issue with this album,
as one track starts to blend into another after a while. The
compositions just don't differ enough from track to track to
make you want to listen to it more than once. |
