The Normal Years

This album is a beautiful mess. At least
that's what BTS would like you to believe. In the crazy like
a fox kind of way these guys make music, this messiness is just
a side-effect of genius. Indie pop songs that feature quirky
lyrics, cool, simple production and guitar work that never gets
old after years of play. This is the stuff that made me fall
in love with Built to Spill. I know maturation is supposed to
be the earmark of a good band--and many would consider their
later work their true work--but I just love the looseness of
this album, and the fun rock ruckus that they bring. |

There's Nothing Wrong with Love

"In the Morning," the song that
starts off this album, is just one of those great first tracks
that leads perfectly into "Reasons," which then goes
into "Big Dipper," forming almost a perfect opening
trifecta indie pop goodness. This is honestly one of my favorite
albums of all time. I remember listening to it on repeat in
my windowless, brick-lined room on Third Ave. in Manhattan thanking
god that this thing has been recorded to tape and preserved
for future generations to enjoy. I'm not foolish enough to think
that people still give a crap about this record, but I'll do
my damndest to keep it alive. I know it's not necessarily one
of Built to Spill's critically acclaimed classics, but to hell
with what everyone else says. It's almost a perfect shamble
of an album, running its way through gem after gem. |
